What To Do When You Have No Energy To Write

What to do when you don’t have the energy to write or be creative

This may not surprise you, but the answer is: you rest.

No energy to write? Sounds like you need rest.

Brain fogged and unable to connect to your creativity? Sounds like you need rest.

We. Cannot. Create. On. Empty.

Let yourself rest.

And if you’re thinking to yourself, “darn, Marina, all you do is talk about rest and taking breaks. When do you actually write?”

I don’t write as much as I’d like to, I’ll be honest. But by prioritizing rest and my physical and mental wellbeing, when I do sit down to write, I am able to focus, create, and make more progress than if I were trying to force my exhausted brain to produce something.

Rest looks different for everyone. For some people, it’s actually sleeping 9 hours a night. For others, it might be a mid-day break where you can read quietly for 30 minutes or exercise. It could be taking a break from media (Social media, phones, television, screen time in general). When you give your body and mind what it needs to recharge, you will see a huge change in how you think, feel, and function.

Taking a break from Instagram for a week was hugely restful for me. I’m traveling this week and my internal clock will be all turned around so I’m prioritizing good sleep at night and less stress.

November is a quieter month for me and I know I will have more time then to sit down and revise, so the plan is to take care of my mind and body and let it rest enough to have the energy to create. I’m allowed to, and so are you.
