How to build a writing habit
What are your bad habits? I pick up my phone first thing every morning and scroll mindlessly before getting out of bed. I’m trying so hard to crack it!
What are your good habits? I got in the habit of calling my grandmother once a week after my grandpa died because I could tell she was lonely, and it has become the call I look forward to most each week. She makes me smile and feel grounded even from across the country.
And What are your writing habits? This month I’m writing Monday - Friday from 10 AM - 12 PM. I forgot how much I liked that chunk of time, how soothing it was to quiet my exterior world and dive into words and creativity for a bit.
I also host (and participate in) writing sprints every week, which helps me keep a “writing date” I never break with myself.
Those positive habits have helped me grow as a writer and as a person. I feel more confident with who I am and what I’m doing because I’ve shown myself that I can do what I set out to do even if it’s hard, even when it’s not working right, even if no one else “gets” it.
So what are some of the habits you wish to take on? Maybe you want to meditate every morning, or stretch before bed. Maybe you want to use your lunch break to work on the short story you have in your head instead of scrolling through Instagram.
Whatever the habit, set the intention and the time you’ll do it and do it every day for a week. Set an alarm, get an accountability buddy, however you need to do it.
If you want a start, sign up for my writing sprints with the button below – I’ll be there to keep you accountable and cheer you on.
Can’t make a sprint? Email me your goal and I will make a note to check back in with you at the end of the week.
Writing takes positive habits. Writing takes community. We’ve got this.
