Take A Break

If you know me, you know my two favorite phrases are “there are no rules” and “take a break!’ because when it comes to writing and creating, often we are thinking too much and too hard about the “what ifs” and the “who will read this” and the “how good can I be” as well as the “if I don’t finish it now I’ll never finish it” feelings.

If you’ve been having a crazy month, if you’ve been pushing pushing pushing without a break, this is your time to pause. For example, I just went on a mini-vacation for my mom’s birthday and I THOUGHT ABOUT WORK THE WHOLE TIME. Relaxation fail.

BUT if you’ve been avoiding writing and creating because you’re busy and hot and tired...maybe it’s time to take a break from those feelings and actually sit your butt in a chair and write.

Hear me out.

You don’t have to write for long. But with the craziness of schedules usually comes the lack of routine. And it can be really hard to re-start a routine or build a new one. SO if you’re someone who has been avoiding a creative project this summer...this is your time to pick it up.

Grab a cold drink. Because it’s hot here in SoCal and I enjoy citrusy seltzer water on ice. And then sit your butt down in that chair and set your timer for five minutes.

Yep. FIVE MINUTES.

Then, sit down and write down as many words as you can think of for five minutes. Let your brain freak out and write as fast as you can type/scribble.

Take a deep breath and set your timer for five minutes again. Then, pick one of those words and just write about it, or to it. Whatever comes to your mind is what you write about. Don’t think any harder than that.

I want you to do this every day for a week. I guarantee you, by the end of the seven days, you will hate the practice part of writing a little less, because you’ll have faked-out your brain and instead of focusing on the worries you focused on the words.
